Let me tell you a story about my District 6 neighborhood and how I became involved in city politics:
In about 1988, the City of Austin illegally required my Canyon Creek Municipal Utility District (or MUD) to be annexed in exchange for dropping a lawsuit against the MUD's formation. Then, they illegally taxed my Canyon Creek neighbors for nearly two decades before our lawsuit finally caught up to them.
It took an order by the Texas Supreme Court for the City to cease their taxing; they dragged our case through the appeals courts for years, at great expense to taxpayers, because no court had ever awarded "back taxes" for illegally collected taxes!
Why would the City of Austin persist in illegally taxing properties in the city? The answer is summed up by this simple quote by an infamous bank robber:
"Because that's where the money is!" --Willie Sutton.
